Unusual Briefs Are the Norm in PR

Sean Miles, director of prototyping, Designworks

We get our share of unusual briefs here at Designworks, but we recently had one from Clarion that stood out...

As part of a PR campaign for their client, Warburtons, Clarion wanted to develop a heated butter knife. We rose to the challenge and developed the Toastie Knife - a butter knife that is heated via a battery powered heating element.

Our team looked at a number of innovative methods to heat the blade to the desired temperature, before developing a chrome blade with an integrated heating element, with the handle acting as a component/battery housing.  Needless to say, our Development Lab smelt of toast for a little while!  Not only was the design created here, but our in-house model-making team created a fully working prototype.

We're pleased to say that it’s caused quite a stir since the PR campaign started, with some people even asking if Warburtons will take it from a concept prototype into manufacture! Here's a video of the knife in action.

Click on some of the links below to see some of the reaction it got...
